COMMON ISSUES WITH GROUNDWATER

In South Africa, we face continual problems with our council water supply.  Leaking pipes are all too common and can often leave us sitting without water for many days on end.  In addition, council water has become pricy and we are still due for another increase this month.  As a result, people have begun to look at different ways of accessing water. In particular, many people are now considering accessing their groundwater   However, before you can use your groundwater you need to treat it correctly and filter it. Let’s look now at some common issues with groundwater in South Africa.

Common issues with groundwater in South Africa may include sediment, bacteria, high salts, high hardness, corrosion, iron and manganese.

You need to address these issues before you can safely use your groundwater.  However, the good news is that water filtration can effectively address each of these problems.

You can use groundwater both indoors and outdoors.  You can connect your groundwater to your irrigation system and use it for watering your garden.  You can even use it to fill your pool provided that you treat it correctly first.  You can also connect it to your mains and use it indoors.  Again, you will need to filter it first as it can cause issues with your appliances (like your dishwasher and washing machine) if not treated.

Let’s take a look now at the benefits of water filtration:

THE BENEFITS OF WATER FILTRATION

  • You will have clean, safe drinking water

WHAT DOES LIVING “OFF-THE-GRID” MEAN?

Living “off-the-grid” is a term we are hearing more and more these days.  The energy crisis we are facing in South Africa combined with continual water leaks has left us all thinking of more self-sustaining ways of living. As a result, some people are exploring the option of off-the-grid living But you may be wondering exactly what living “off-the-grid” means.

The main concept behind living “off-the-grid” is that you live in a self-sufficient way that is disconnected from the municipal infrastructure.  This means that you are not connected to the municipal grid for water, electricity and sewerage.  It also means that you produce your own food and take care of your own waste removal.

In summary, the following are key components of off-grid-living:

  • energy independence
  • water self-sufficiency
  • independent waste management
  • food production
  • a minimal reliance on external services

WHY DO PEOPLE CHOOSE TO LIVE OFF THE GRID?

There are many reasons people choose to live off-the-grid.  These include the following:

  • It allows you to live independently and with greater self-sufficiency
  • It’s more environmentally friendly
  • This lifestyle embraces healthier living
  • Off-grid living is a way to simplify your life
  • It can be cost-efficient
  • Off-grid living helps you to reduce your carbon footprint
  • It can give you food security

Off-the-grid living is something that can be done in varying degrees. This ranges from a partial self-sufficient lifestyle to a completely self-sustaining one. Whichever way you go, you will need effective planning, knowledge, and resourcefulness. It’s a lifestyle that comes with many benefits and of course also challenges.  However, these can be overcome.

And even if you can’t move out to a remote property and live in the countryside remember that we can all take steps towards being more self-sustaining.  Installing solar power, accessing your underground water and installing water filtration at your current property are all steps that will help you become more independent and self-sustaining!

HOW LONG WILL A WATER TANK LAST?

One of the key elements to off-grid living is to have your own water source.  Collecting rainwater is one way to do this.  As a result, water tanks are an important investment.  But just how long will a water tank last?

As a general rule of thumb, a water tank should last for around 10 years.  Because it lasts for such a long time it provides excellent value for money.

Depending on what you will use your water for, you may need water filtration. This particularly applies if you want to use your water inside the house.  This is because unfiltered water can damage appliances like your washing machine and dishwasher.

And if you are wanting to drink your water then it will definitely require water filtration to make it safe for consumption.

As a result, you will need to take a water sample and have it tested.  Thereafter, a water filtration system will be designed to address the issues with your water.

Living off-grid means that you will need to have your own water source and power supply.  Consequently, you will need to have water tanks to harvest rainwater and also to store water if you have a borehole.  So water tanks are a key investment if you are trying to live in a more self-sustaining way.

Those of us living in South Africa understand clearly the need to live in a more self-sustaining way particularly with the fear of a drought hanging over us and the energy crisis we face.

As a result, we are now looking at ways to be more self-sustaining. This may be through installing solar panels, water tanks, investing in water filtration or even exploring alternative sources of water like boreholes.

Whichever way now, we are all purusuing this in whatever capacity we can. And we at the Green Revolution are here to help you in this journey however we can!

WHAT IS REVERSE OSMOSIS?

It’s essential to have access to clean drinking water.  This is especially true for off-grid living. As a result, it’s crucial to consider water filtration. When it comes to water filtration reverse osmosis is often a popular choice.  But what is reverse osmosis?  Read on!

Reverse osmosis is a water filtration technique. It will generally remove iron, salt, minerals, and harmful bacteria from your water. It does this by forcing the water through a semi-permeable membrane under high pressure. As a result, only water molecules are able to pass through. Consequently, everything else is restricted from passing through the membrane.

WHAT TYPES OF MEMBRANES ARE USED IN REVERSE OSMOSIS?

There are 3 types of membranes that are used in reverse osmosis. These are:

  • A Tap water membrane
  • A Brack water membrane
  • A Desalination water membrane

For normal household filtration, either a tap water membrane or a brack water membrane should be effective.

As an additional measure, the water should also be treated by chlorination or UV lights. This is to prevent the spread of harmful bacteria.

If you are moving towards off-grid living then securing a clean source of drinking water is essential.  Many people consider drilling a borehole when they think about off-grid living.  This is an excellent first step however, hand in hand with this goes water filtration

Let’s take a look now at the benefits of water filtration.

  • Safe and clean drinking water
  • Pleasant-tasting drinking water
  • Healthy cooking
  • You can save money
  • Protect your plumbing and appliances
  • It helps protect the environment
  • It helps prevent skin irritations

Water filtration comes with some great benefits. You will need to take a water sample and have it water tested. Thereafter a water filtration system will be designed according to your needs.

A borehole has many great benefits!  In particular, it’s an excellent way to save money on your water bill.  If you have a borehole you may be wondering if you need water filtration for your borehole water.  Let’s take a deeper look at this question.

The need for water filtration depends on what you will use your borehole water for.  It will also depend on what’s in your water. This will need to be determined by a water analysis test.

In general, if you are using it to simply water your garden then you may not require water filtration.  If you intend to use it inside your house then you will definitely need water filtration.

The first step after drilling a borehole is to have your water tested.  This can be done through Bemlab which is associated with Pathcare.  You will need to provide them with a water sample. This will then be tested.  Once you receive your analysis a water filtration system can be designed to address your needs.

Let’s take a look now at the benefits of water filtration:

  • You will have safe drinking water.
  • Your drinking water will be pleasant tasting.
  • It’s good for your health to drink pure, filtered water.
