THE TWO TYPES OF SOLAR GEYSER SYSTEMS

Solar geysers allow you to heat your water using the sun’s energy.   There are two types of solar geyser systems that cater to diverse climates and water heating needs.

These two systems are direct (open-loop) and indirect (closed-loop) systems. It’s important to understand the distinctions between these systems so that you can decide which one suits you best.

DIRECT (OPEN-LOOP) SOLAR GEYSER SYSTEM

In this system, water circulates directly through the solar collectors, absorbing heat. Subsequently, a pump transfers the heated water into the storage tank for usage.

Direct systems are simpler and more cost-effective to install because they do not require heat exchangers or heat transfer fluid. They are ideal for regions with reliable access to safe drinking water and where freeze protection is not a concern.

INDIRECT (CLOSED-LOOP) SOLAR GEYSER SYSTEM

Indirect solar geyser systems use a heat transfer fluid (a glycol-water mixture) to absorb heat in the solar collectors. This heated fluid is then transferred through a heat exchanger, where it releases its heat to the water stored in the tank.

Indirect systems are best for areas with freezing temperatures as they provide freeze protection for the collectors and plumbing.

Let’s take a look now at the benefits of a solar geyser.

THE BENEFITS OF A SOLAR GEYSER

  1. You don’t need to rely on electricity
  2. The energy used is renewable, free, and unlimited

HOW DOES A SOLAR GEYSER WORK?

In South Africa, load-shedding is causing more and more of us to turn to solar power as a solution to our energy crisis. In particular, solar geysers are a popular choice for many people. Solar geysers harness the sun’s energy to heat water. They are both cost-effective and eco-friendly.  But how does a solar geyser work? Read on!

A solar geyser works in the following way: water is stored in the panels of your solar geyser and energy from the sun heats the water.  As a result of convection, the water begins to circulate through the panels.  This means that as the water gets warmer it begins to rise and move into the water tank.  From here it moves into the cylinder.

The cooler water in the tanks moves downwards and into the absorber.  In this way, the water moves through your solar geyser due to convection.

It’s important to remember that convection can not take place if your geyser is in the ceiling and at a lower level than the panels.  Consequently, you will need a circulating pump to move the water between the tank and the panels in this situation.

Now that we’ve looked at the question, “How does a solar geyser work” let’s look at the benefits of solar power.

THE BENEFITS OF A SOLAR GEYSER

  1. You don’t need to rely on electricity
  2. The energy used is renewable, free, and unlimited
  3. Immense savings on your electricity bill
  4. A solar water geyser heats water very efficiently
  5. It’s environmentally friendly
  6. There is no use of fossil fuels
  7. Solar geysers have zero-emission
  8. It provides a lower carbon footprint
  9. A solar geyser is low-maintenance

As you can see, investing in a solar geyser is a solid investment for so many reasons. However, the top benefit is that it can help you save money on your electricity bill.  With the recent increases in electricity, this is such a bonus and makes this a worthwhile investment!

HOW LONG DOES A SOLAR GEYSER TAKE TO WARM UP?

Solar geysers offer an eco-friendly and cost-effective way to heat water using the power of the sun. However, one common question among users is how long does a solar geyser take to warm up and provide hot water.

When warming your solar geyser entirely with the energy from the sun it takes approximately 4 to 5 hours to heat a 300-liter tank.  By contrast, an electric element geyser takes approximately 2 to 2½ hours to heat.

Some factors that affect this are as follows:

1. HOW MUCH SUNLIGHT IS AVAILABLE

The most critical factor affecting the warm-up time of a solar geyser is sunlight availability. Solar geysers rely on direct sunlight to heat water efficiently. On sunny days, the water inside the geyser tank reaches the desired temperature quickly. However, on cloudy or overcast days, the process may take longer as there’s less solar energy to work with.

2. LOCATION

Your geographical location plays an important role. In sunnier regions with more hours of daylight, solar geysers tend to heat up faster and more consistently. By contrast, areas with limited sunlight, especially during certain seasons, may experience longer warm-up times.

We are all feeling the pinch these days financially.  In addition, the recent price hike in electricty has left us all looking for ways to save money on our electricity bill. A solar geyser will help you accomplish this..  As a result, that makes it an excellent investment that will benefit you long term.

WILL A SOLAR GEYSER STILL GET WARM IN WINTER?

It’s becoming more and more essential to move towards solar power these days. The intense load-shedding we are currently facing in South Africa is forcing more and more of us towards solar power.  A solar geyser is a great step in this direction.  Today we’re going to explore the question, “Will a solar geyser still get warm in winter?”.  Read on!

The answer is yes, a solar geyser will still get warm in

winter due to the following factors:

1. SOLAR ENERGY COLLECTION

Solar geysers use sunlight to heat water.  However, they can still capture and convert sunlight into heat, even on cloudy or overcast days, although their efficiency may be slightly reduced. During winter, the system may take longer to heat water.   However, it will still work.

2. INSULATION

In addition, it’s important to remember that solar geysers are typically well-insulated to minimize heat loss. As a result, the hot water remains hot and doesn’t cool down rapidly, even in colder weather.

3. BACK-UP HEATING

And finally, it’s important to remember that there is electric or backup heating. Many solar geyser systems are equipped with backup heating elements, usually electric, which can be activated during cloudy days or when the solar heating capacity is insufficient. As a result, you will have a constant supply of hot water, regardless of weather conditions.

A solar geyser is an excellent investment! With the current challenges we are facing in South Africa with load-shedding it’s critical to transition to solar power in whatever capacity we can. It can be expensive going completely off-grid however, investing in a solar geyser is within reach for many people and it’s a solid investment!

THE ENVIRONMENTAL BENEFITS OF SOLAR POWER

Solar power is the way to go these days.  It provides a very viable solution to the energy crisis we are facing in South Africa.  In addition, it can also help you save money in the long run on your electricity bill.  However, in addition to all of this, it’s also beneficial to the environment.  Let’s take a look now at the environmental benefits of solar power.

1. REDUCED GREENHOUSE GAS EMISSIONS

Solar power generates energy using the sun.  As a result, no destructive greenhouse gases like carbon dioxide, and methane are produced.  These have been linked to global warming and climate change. By contrast, solar power releases no harmful gases. As a result, it helps to protect the earth’s atmosphere and ultimately conserve the earth.

2. AIR-POLLUTION REDUCTION

Fossil fuel-based energy plants release harmful pollutants like sulphur dioxide into the air.  These cause terrible smog and pollution.  Solar power, on the other hand, doesn’t do this.  As a result, the air stays clean and unpolluted.

3. CONSERVATION OF OUR WATER

Fossil fuel-based energy plants use large amounts of water to cool things down.  By contrast, solar power does not do this.  As a result, it helps to conserve water and reduces the strain on our limited water resources.

4. LOWER CARBON FOOTPRINT

Carbon footprint refers to the total amount of greenhouse gas emissions (including carbon dioxide and method) produced directly and indirectly by our actions. Solar energy systems leave a significantly smaller carbon footprint compared to traditional fossil fuel-based energy.

5. SOLAR POWER IS A RENEWABLE RESOURCE

Unlike fossil fuels which are not renewable and a limited resource, solar power is abundant and a renewable resource. It provides a sustainable and long-term solution to our energy needs and particularly our energy crisis in South Africa.
