WHAT DOES A SOLAR POWER SYSTEM CONSIST OF?

Solar power is fast becoming a popular option in South Africa.  As a result of load-shedding, we have all been forced to look into alternative power sources.   A solar system harnesses the sun’s power and converts it into usable electricity.  But what does a solar system consist of?

1. SOLAR PANELS

Solar panels, also known as photovoltaic (PV) panels, are at the heart of a solar power system.  They are usually installed on rooftops. Solar panels absorb sunlight and change it into DC current.

2. BATTERIES

Batteries store the excess energy that is produced during sunny periods.  This can be used on days when there isn’t adequate sunshine.

3. INVERTER

The inverter changes the electricity from DC current to AC current so that it is compatible with electrical appliances in our homes.

4. CHARGE CONTROLLER

The main job of a charge controller is to regulate the flow of current from the solar panels to the batteries.  It ensures that the batteries don’t overcharge.  As a result, this makes sure there’s no damage to them and protects the lifespan of the batteries

BENEFITS OF SOLAR POWER

  • It helps take the stress out of load-shedding.
  • Solar power helps you save money on your electricity bill
  • Solar power is renewable and sustainable.
  • It is clean and environmentally friendly.
  • Solar power has low-maintenance costs once it has been installed
  • It allows for off-the-grid living
  • Solar power increases the value of your property.

Now that we’ve looked at what a solar power system consists of, you can see that it’s an excellent option.  It provides a viable alternative to the struggles we are having with load-shedding.  In addition, it’s also eco-friendly, minimises carbon emissions, and promotes a greener future.
